About The Artist

Canadian artist and teacher Alex Colville (1920–2013) is known for his enigmatic, mysterious paintings of everyday life. His figurative subject matter is rendered in meticulous detail and his wife Rhoda is depicted in many of his paintings. Colville was born in Toronto and lived in Montreal and Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Colville represented Canada in the 1966 Venice Biennale. His work is found in museum permanent collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany, Museé national d’art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
